The walk asks something the letter does not. What kind of mind emerges when humans and machines think together? A person reaches for a tool. The tool holds what the person cannot hold alone. Then many people do this at once.

In March 1960, J. C. R. Licklider separated three things people still blur. A tool that lengthens the arm. A machine that replaces the operator. And symbiosis: dissimilar partners, human and computer, coupled tightly enough to think in a way neither manages alone. Marshall McLuhan had already said the nervous system out loud, in 1964, about electric media. Musk is a later voice.

The 42 this walk keeps belongs to Douglas Adams. In a 2013 interview at the Computer History Museum, Musk remembers the novel. A vast computer gives the answer 42, and the missing piece is the question. That 42 measures no cable, and no collective.

The word is a claim, and it has a date. On 2 August 1910, William Morton Wheeler lectured at Woods Hole. The lecture appeared in June 1911 as The Ant-Colony as an Organism. That title does not say superorganism. The wording shows up in his 1928 book The Social Insects.
